Players Cheer Jaxson Dart’s Practice Slide: ‘We’ve Been Begging Him to Do That’
Teammates and the defense cheered after the quarterback avoided contact on a play that had led to five concussion evaluations last season.
On Monday, New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart slid during practice, his first slide in 11 training camp sessions, drawing applause from head coach John Harbaugh and cheers from teammates.
Last year, Dart's aggressive running style led to one concussion and five evaluations for head trauma, despite throwing for 2,272 yards and 15 touchdowns while rushing 487 yards in 14 games.
Giants edge-rusher Brian Burns said, "We've been begging him to do that for a while," while wide receiver Darnell Mooney added, "So, he's being smart" about the defensive reaction.
Head coach Harbaugh praised Dart's growing comfort with offensive operations, stating, "I mean, we've made a lot of progress with that" regarding team execution and play-calling.
Former NFL coach Jon Gruden previously predicted Dart would frequently need medical evaluation, but this slide suggests the quarterback is implementing the durability adjustments he acknowledged as essential in May.
