Ishiba plans talks on raising departure tax on foreign tourists | The Asahi Shimbun Asia & Japan Watch

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba reacted positively to a proposal to raise the departure tax on foreign tourists when they leave Japan.

Japan will impose an international tourist tax of 1,000 yen per person on foreign visitors and outbound tourists from 2019. On Monday (May 19), a Japanese senator proposed raising the "outbound tax" for visitors to Japan as a source of funds for tourism pollution countermeasures. In response, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba agreed.
