Japan Secures Major LNG Deal as Energy Risks Mount
The countries signed a 20-year LNG supply deal and said they will expand joint military exercises and maritime security cooperation.
On Wednesday, Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae and Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim met in Tokyo, aligning on defense and energy strategies amid regional security concerns.
Shared concerns over China's maritime claims and Middle East conflict disruptions drove the collaboration, as Japan seeks to secure alternative energy supplies and strengthen maritime defense capabilities.
Petronas and Jera signed a deal for 2 million tons of liquefied natural gas annually for 20 years, while leaders agreed to deepen security ties through Japan's Official Security Assistance.
Anwar emphasized that Malaysia's assembly strengths complement Japan's manufacturing leadership, positioning the nations to build integrated technology ecosystems and strengthen regional semiconductor supply chains.
Both leaders committed to deepening relations ahead of the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties next year, with plans to expand cooperation on critical minerals, the digital economy, and artificial intelligence.
