James Martin Wins Democratic Nomination for U.S. House in Florida's 21st Congressional District
Martin won 50.4% of the vote in a razor-close Democratic primary and will face Rep. Brian Mast in November.
On Friday, Coast Guard veteran James Martin secured the Democratic nomination for Florida's 21st Congressional District, defeating Bernard Taylor with 50.4% of the vote.
The primary was extremely tight, with candidates separated by only a few hundred votes; Taylor, a firefighter and EMT, positioned himself as a working-class alternative to Martin.
Taylor conceded Thursday, writing that "the voters have spoken, and while this isn't the outcome we hoped for, we respect their decision," while Martin posted on Facebook he was "honored to be the nominee."
Martin now faces Republican Rep. Brian Mast in the general election; Mast, an Army veteran who lost both legs in Afghanistan, won reelection in 2024 with nearly 62% of the vote.
A Democrat has not represented this area in a decade, creating a difficult path for Martin, who has argued that voters need a change from what he calls "politics as usual.
