Jamaica scrambles to restore power after rare islandwide blackout
Officials said power was restored to about 500,000 of nearly 700,000 customers as investigators examined a possible lightning-related cause.
The Jamaica Public Service Company confirmed a total power outage beginning just after 9 p.m. on Friday, affecting all utility customers across the Caribbean nation of 2.8 million people.
By Saturday morning, JPS had restored power to roughly 500,000 of the 700,000 affected customers, with officials expecting full restoration within hours.
Company president Hugh Grant stated the blackout was likely triggered by lightning striking near major substations and other grid infrastructure.
Simultaneously, a fire broke out Friday evening at the Jamaica Defense Force headquarters in Park Camp; no injuries were reported after the blaze was successfully extinguished.
Energy Minister Daryl Vaz called the outage an "UNACCEPTABLE SITUATION," demanding an emergency meeting with utility officials while committing to keep the nation updated.
