Cleveland Police Statement Ahead of Funeral of Man Who Died in A66 Crash
The service followed an A66 crash that killed seven people, and schools and roads closed as officials prepared for large crowds and traffic delays.
- On Friday, hundreds of mourners gathered at St John the Evangelist Church in the South Bank area of Middlesbrough for the funeral of Jakub Matusiak, 23, who died in an A66 crash.
- Matusiak was one of five young men killed on August 22 when their Volkswagen Passat collided head-on with a marked police vehicle, also claiming the lives of PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38.
- Several local schools closed early due to expected traffic congestion and transport disruption, while police maintained a 'proportionate visible police presence' to ensure public safety throughout the area.
- Education Secretary Lucy Powell supported the difficult closure decisions, coordinating with local officials to deploy surge policing and extra resources to 'calm those tensions down and to make those streets safe.'
- The force has recently arrested 87 people linked to organized crime gangs and deployed more than 200 additional officers to Middlesbrough to suppress violence and restore order following recent incidents.
