Jaishankar Meets Sri Lankan Leaders, Pledges $450 Mn to Help with Cyclone Ditwah’s Destruction
- Dec 23, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced a $450 million reconstruction package to Sri Lanka in Colombo and handed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's letter to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
- The cyclone killed more than 640 people and inflicted about $4 billion in damage, affecting more than two million people, with India framing its response under Neighbourhood First and MAHASAGAR policies.
- Relief deliveries included more than 1,100 tonnes of supplies, and Indian Navy ships and helicopters supported urgent rescue efforts, Jaishankar said.
- The package comprises $350 million in concessional lines of credit and $100 million in grants, with assistance targeting roads, railways, bridges, housing, health, education, agriculture and disaster preparedness.
- Longer-Term measures include boosting Indian tourism and foreign direct investment as Jaishankar said India stands firmly with Sri Lanka, following the International Monetary Fund $2.9 billion bailout in early 2023.
