UK car production fell by a quarter in September amid JLR cyberattack
Jaguar Land Rover's five-week factory shutdown caused a 27% drop in UK car production in September and a 24.5% slump in exports, with recovery expected by January 2026.
- Last month, Jaguar Land Rover's cyber-attack caused production to halt at its three UK plants, driving UK car output down 27%, the SMMT said.
- After the breach, JLR's IT systems were shut down and global manufacturing halted, with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders saying the attack largely caused the slump.
- SMMT data show total output fell to about 54,300 in September, the lowest September since 1952, while exports slumped 24.5% to the EU, US, Turkey, Japan and South Korea.
- The Cyber Monitoring Centre found 5,000 businesses affected and said a full recovery will not occur until January 2026, while Ian Plummer, boss of Autotrader, called the shutdown a `severe, but short-term issue`.
- Research published Tuesday estimated the attack will cost 1.9bn, and the industry urged rapid interventions like retaining ECOS, the SMMT said, to support competitiveness.
