Residents Should Report Racism Involving Police, Montreal North Mayor Says
Christine Black said 16 officers were removed from patrol duties as Montreal police investigate allegations of racial profiling and discrimination.
On Sunday, Montreal-Nord Mayor Christine Black urged residents who experienced racial profiling by police to come forward, saying "It's the best way to make your voice heard and contribute to ensuring the full truth comes to light."
Friday's administrative overhaul saw Montreal police dismantle a night patrol unit and remove 16 officers from duty amid allegations of racial profiling and discrimination at Station 39.
Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada described the allegations as "totally unacceptable" and pledged to accelerate body-worn camera deployment, while Dimitrios Jim Beis, the executive committee member responsible for public safety, said "We absolutely need to hear their point of view."
Black acknowledged that "Systemic racism is not new in Montreal-Nord," noting revelations reopen wounds from past incidents, including the 2008 death of teenager Fredy Villanueva, who was shot by a police officer.
Two suspended officers face investigation by Quebec prosecutors for potential Criminal Code violations, while police chief Fady Dagher confirmed these allegations are part of the ongoing probe into misconduct at the station.
