France's Greens Challenge Government with No Confidence Vote over Heatwave Response
The motion follows at least 1,000 deaths from the June heatwave and a Green call for an inquiry into France’s adaptation policy.
- On Tuesday, France's Green party filed a no-confidence motion against the government of Sebastien Lecornu, citing inadequate heatwave response measures as Green parliamentary leader Cyrielle Chatelain accused the administration of failing citizens.
- France experienced a record-breaking 11-day heatwave in June claiming at least 1,000 lives, with temperatures rising above 40 in many parts of the country, prompting political anger over inadequate government measures.
- "The government's lack of adaptation kills, just as much as the heat does," Cyrielle Chatelain told reporters, while health officials noted the current death toll is based on certificates that "cover only about 60 percent of deaths on average."
- Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, Sebastien Lecornu rejected the motion, accusing the Greens of spreading "false" information and calling the move "scandalous," adding "It's the first time I've lost my temper."
- While the motion is not expected to pass, the party called for a commission of inquiry into government climate policy, as epidemiologist Basile Chaix warned that "this summer we may be closer to 7,000 than to 1,000" heatwave deaths.
