Kremlin critic Kasparov says US and Lithuania warned him of assassination threat
Kasparov said the warnings followed a suspected Russian plot against opposition figures and new US charges against five alleged intelligence agents.
- United States and Lithuanian security services warned chess legend Garry Kasparov, 63, and associate Ivan Tyutrin that they are on a list of assassination targets. "Lithuanian and US security services informed us that our lives were in danger," Kasparov said.
- The warnings followed mid-September Department charges against five alleged Russian intelligence agents conspiring to murder a "prominent Russian dissident" in the United States this summer for an estimated $40,000. One defendant is an FSB security service officer.
- Spanish newspaper El Mundo reported agents plotted to kill Kasparov and former Russian lawmaker Ilya Ponomaryov. Earlier operations involved offering $25,000 to a US citizen to murder a target in Lithuania identified as "Victim-2" by "throwing a bottle of gasoline" at him.
- Kasparov described the news as a "shock," while Tyutrin said he remains grateful to Lithuania for the warning despite his state-provided security detail being withdrawn several months earlier. "I am grateful to them for informing me," Tyutrin said.
- The alleged plot marks an escalation in Russian operations on Western soil, with Moscow classifying the Free Russia Forum as a "terrorist" organization in 2025. Tyutrin said the targeting reflects broader Kremlin efforts to intimidate Ukraine supporters.
