Italy’s Meloni Condemns Violence After Protests Turn Violent Across Several Cities
Meloni said peaceful protest is a democratic right but urged opposition leaders to clearly reject violence after clashes injured police and led to detentions.
On Sunday, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned violent demonstrations that erupted Saturday across Milan, Turin, and Bologna, stating that while peaceful protest is fundamental to democracy, destruction and attacks on security forces are unacceptable.
Demonstrations organized by the "Italy in the Square" committee protested soaring inflation, low wages, and deteriorating public services, with student-led mobilization in Milan alone drawing more than 5,000 participants to the streets.
In Milan, scenes described by Rai News as "urban warfare" saw violent agitators smash windows and launch pyrotechnics at State Police along Via Broletto, resulting in approximately 12 hospitalizations and around 50 detentions.
Meloni urged rival political parties to condemn the violence and ensure future demonstrations remain peaceful, insisting that "silence is not acceptable" regarding attacks on police and property damage across Italian cities.
