Jet Fuel Crisis: Rationing Triggered at Four Airports in Italy
Airlines face caps of 2,000 litres on short-haul refuelling as officials reserve fuel for medical, state and longer flights, reports said.
- Restrictions on refueling began this weekend at four major Italian airports—Bologna, Milan Linate, Treviso, and Venice—due to limited availability from a key supplier linked to broader supply disruptions.
- The logistical bottleneck stems from international tensions, specifically the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz for tankers carrying crude oil, disrupting fuel flows to Europe and straining regional supply chains.
- Notices specify that "priority will be given to ambulance flights, state flights and flights with a duration of more than three hours," while authorities imposed a supply ceiling of 2,000 litres per aircraft for shorter routes.
- Domestic routes, such as those between Veneto and Sicily, face potential service impacts, though officials noted most airlines continue operations without widespread issues despite fuel costs soaring over 100% in some areas.
- Prolonged closure could affect up to 25 per cent of fuel supplies for European carriers between May and June, as Lufthansa confirmed that "the longer the Strait of Hormuz remains blocked, the more critical the security of paraffin supplies could become.
