Italy finalising new military aid package for Ukraine
The classified package could include Aster interceptor missiles as Ukraine seeks more air defenses against Russian missile and drone attacks, officials said.
- On Thursday, Italy began finalizing its 13th military aid package for Ukraine, its first of 2026. Defence Minister Guido Crosetto will present the classified plan to the COPASIR parliamentary committee on November 10.
- Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government faces internal friction over the shipment, as Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini and his League party oppose further arms deliveries. Legal authorization for aid currently expires on December 31.
- While the contents remain classified, Reuters reported the decree could include Aster interceptor missiles for the Franco-Italian SAMP/T air-defence system. Rome has previously sent 12 packages without publishing inventories, citing operational-security grounds.
- Kyiv has repeatedly requested air-defence capabilities to counter intensified Russian missile and drone attacks on critical infrastructure. This package aims to address those urgent security needs, though it remains subject to parliamentary procedure.
- Whether Parliament extends authorization into 2027 remains unsettled, with the issue likely becoming more politically sensitive as Italy approaches a general election next year. Current aid framework runs through December 31.
