Italy Probes EasyJet: Allegations of Unfair Baggage Fees
The regulator said easyJet’s booking system defaulted to bundled baggage options and could mislead passengers about the real cost of one-way add-ons.
On Tuesday, Italy's antitrust authority AGCM opened a formal investigation into easyJet Airline Company Limited over alleged unfair commercial practices related to baggage pricing on its website and mobile app.
EasyJet's booking system set bundled checked baggage for round trips as the automatic default, presenting only an average price even when customers had no intention of purchasing for both legs, forcing passengers to interrupt checkout to override the setting.
AGCM's investigation will assess whether the airline's booking system created unclear pricing conditions and limited consumers' ability to make fully informed choices about the true cost per flight leg.
EasyJet has not publicly commented on the case, though the airline previously faced a €2.8 million fine in May 2021 alongside Ryanair and Volotea for failing to offer cash reimbursements during COVID-19 cancellations, and lost an appeal in February 2025.
AGCM has shown aggressive enforcement against airlines broadly; in December 2025, it fined Ryanair €255 million for what the authority concluded was an "elaborate strategy" involving facial-recognition checks and account deletions, a decision Ryanair vowed to appeal.
