Italy announces release of Flotilla activists detained in Libya
The activists were handed to Italy’s consul in Benghazi after about a month in custody, and a hunger strike followed their detention, the flotilla said.
- On Wednesday, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced three Italian nationals detained in Libya for 30 days have been released, including Domenico Centrone, Leonarda Alberizia, and Uruguay-born Italian Matias Alvarez Rodriguez.
- Part of a 230-member Global Sumud Flotilla land convoy, the volunteers were "subjected to arbitrary detention, severed communications, and sustained psychological pressure" during their mission to transport medical supplies to Gaza.
- Separately, Global Sumud Flotilla wrote on X that six other activists are expected to be released within 24 hours after 30 days of "illegal detention," following earlier hunger strikes by detained volunteers.
- Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni slammed the treatment as "unacceptable" last month, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced the aid project as a "malicious scheme" intended to support Hamas.
- Around 50 vessels under the Global Sumud Flotilla attempted to reach Gaza by sea last month, as Israel continues to maintain a strict blockade on the territory since 2007.
