It would be a mistake to repeal B.C. housing legislation, says UBC expert
A University of British Columbia housing expert says the law remains a powerful tool despite criticism and thousands of empty condos in the province.
On Wednesday, University of B.C. housing policy expert Alexandra Flynn cautioned against repealing the New Democrat government's density legislation, calling it a "powerful tool" despite calls to dismantle it.
Premier-Designate Lorne Doerkson promised to repeal the legislation, which imposed housing targets that local governments heavily criticized, arguing communities better understand their own needs.
Flynn disputes claims that empty units indicate a functioning market, noting British Columbia still requires significant housing for low-income residents in municipalities with a population above 5,000.
While acknowledging the legislation requires improvements in how housing targets are communicated, Flynn stated, "This is not the time to be thinking about what to repeal."
Instead of dismantling existing frameworks, Flynn emphasized, "It's a time to set the course for a new agenda moving forward," as British Columbia navigates ongoing housing shortages.
