No EU Unanimity for Sanctions Against Ben-Gvir
Kaja Kallas says member states still lack the unanimity needed for sanctions, while at least 15 are weighing a settlement goods ban.
- Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee urged EU peers to use a Qualified Majority Vote on trade, pushing for a ban on goods from illegal settlements in the West Bank.
- An investigation published last week by Global Echo alleged Israel mislabeled goods from illegal settlements as originating in Israel to claim preferential European market access. Nearly one in five shipments from the Occupied Territories were found to be mislabeled.
- At least 15 member states are prepared to review a ban on settlement products, following reports that one in six of more than 5,900 Israeli shipments of fresh produce to Europe were sourced from settlements.
- EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas noted current efforts lack the unanimity required for sanctions, as diplomats confirm a weighted majority does not yet exist to bypass resistance from member states traditionally supportive of Israel.
- Despite calls from Ireland, Spain, and Slovenia to suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement, the European Commission has not yet issued a legal proposal necessary to enact a complete trade ban.
