Gazans Pay Homage to Palestinian Journalists Killed by Israel
Israeli airstrike killed three journalists, raising concerns over press safety in Gaza where at least 249 journalists have died since October 2023, Committee to Protect Journalists says.
- On Thursday, hundreds of people and journalists gathered at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis to mourn three colleagues killed the day before: Abdul Raouf Shaath, Mohammed Salah Qashta and Anas Ghneim.
- The Israeli military says it never deliberately attacks journalists but has admitted killing some it accused of being "terrorist" members; it was looking into the Wednesday strike that killed three, while Israel was not a signatory of Article 79 to the Geneva Conventions.
- On one stretcher, a bulletproof vest marked 'Press' lay over Shaath's body, and under a slate-gray sky, two dandelions and petals rested on the vest as a young woman journalist wept in the morgue.
- The deaths add to a toll of at least 249 journalists since 7 October 2023, the Committee to Protect Journalists says, and Adly Abu Taha called it `another crime to add to the long list of crimes committed by Israel against journalists`.
- It was a scene that has become all too familiar in Gaza, with some recalling last 25 August when strikes killed five Palestinian journalists including an AP contributor, while displaced Palestinians at Al-Mawasi camp showed precarious conditions.
