Isolated Marburg Virus Case Confirmed in Uganda Amid Ebola Surveillance
WHO said the child died and no contacts have developed symptoms as Uganda investigates the isolated Marburg infection.
Ugandan health authorities confirmed an isolated Marburg case in Kyegegwa on Wednesday, identifying the patient as a 1-1/2-year-old child who has died, according to Africa CDC.
Regional disease surveillance identified an Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak in Uganda with 20 cases and two deaths, while the DRC reports 1,406 Ebola cases and 438 deaths.
An anonymous "well-placed source" told Stat News that Uganda detected two Marburg cases as of Monday, yet a Government spokesperson claimed he was not aware of an outbreak.
The World Health Organization began supporting the local response after notification on June 30, while Africa CDC stated, "Africa CDC stands ready to support verification, risk assessment and response readiness as needed."
Transmission routes for Marburg are similar to Ebola, positioning this possible flare as an additional challenge for the overwhelming outbreak response in neighboring DRC.
