IS suspects transferred from Syria to Iraq are interrogated in a Baghdad prison
Iraqi authorities interrogate 5,383 detainees from 60 countries transferred from Syria to prevent escapes and prepare for trials of suspected Islamic State members.
- On Thursday, The Associated Press was given rare access to Al-Karkh Central Prison in western Baghdad, where Iraqi officers are interrogating suspected Islamic State detainees recently transferred from Syria at Baghdad's request and welcomed by the U.S.-led coalition.
- After a January offensive by Syria's new government and a ceasefire, the U.S. announced transfers of nearly 9,000 detainees, with over 5,000 escorted to Baghdad over several weeks.
- Iraqi officers bring detainees in batches, handcuffed and wearing medical facemasks in yellow or brown uniforms, processed one by one in corridor interrogation rooms while some are taken to the on-site medical center at Al-Karkh for checkups.
- Iraqi Judge Ali Hussein Jafat said the process is complicated as 5,383 IS suspects from 14 Arab and 46 other countries have arrived, with the last batch expected on Sunday.
- The transfers have helped calm fears that fighting in Syria would let IS prisoners flee and join sleeper cells; many countries resist repatriation, and extradition remains uncertain.
