After Shuttering 27 Stores, Kohl’s CEO Makes Decision About Remaining Locations
- Michael Bender, CEO of Kohl's, told investors this month the company is not planning another round of widespread store closures in 2026, saying 'I would not anticipate any sort of grand plan of saying we’re taking stores out or adding stores at this point'.
- Because of slumping comparable-store sales and migration-driven trade-area shifts, Kohl's closed 27 underperforming locations and its San Bernardino E-commerce Fulfillment Center in California last year.
- The retailer reported a quarter profit of $125 million and said well over 90% of its more than 1,100 stores are profitable.
- Executives say they will prioritise improving existing locations, with company executives noting 'The focus for us is actually on optimizing what we already have and we’ll be focused on making sure that we continue to push the stores productivity going forward' while evaluating stores annually.
- After resetting its foundation, Kohl's executives say they are ending 2025 stronger, with sales expected flat or down roughly 2% for 2026, marking a pivotal turnaround year.
