Ironman CFL kicker René Paredes bids farewell to CFL, Calgary Stampeders
The 41-year-old leaves as the CFL’s second-most accurate kicker and a six-time all-star after 247 straight regular-season games.
Rene Paredes retired on Thursday after a 15-year career with the Calgary Stampeders, with the 41-year-old kicker spending his entire professional tenure with the club.
Paredes joined the Stampeders in 2011 after being cut by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, initially replacing injured teammate Rob Maver before becoming a six-time CFL all-star.
His 87.6 per cent field-goal success rate ranks second all-time in the CFL behind Sean Whyte, and he recorded 2,559 career points and 13 walk-off, game-winning kicks for Calgary.
A persistent hip injury, which forced him to miss the first 10 games of this season, sealed his decision to retire; Paredes said the toll of being hurt over five years prompted the choice.
Stampeders head coach Dave Dickenson praised Paredes' execution in clutch moments, stating, "Clutch is the main thing," as the kicker looks toward a likely Canadian Football Hall of Fame career.
