B.C. Lions Linebacker Darnell Sankey Named CFL’s Top Defensive Player
Sankey received 158 points and led the league with 136 defensive plays and 114 tackles in voting by Football Reporters of Canada.
On Tuesday, B.C. Lions linebacker Darnell Sankey was named the CFL's top defensive player, securing 158 points in voting by Football Reporters of Canada and finishing ahead of Toronto Argonauts linebacker Adarius Pickett and Calgary Stampeders defensive lineman Clarence Hicks.
Sankey led the CFL with 114 tackles and 136 defensive plays, becoming the second player in league history to register 100 or more tackles in three consecutive seasons while playing all 998 regular-season snaps.
B.C. defensive co-ordinator Mike Benevides, who has coached three winners of this award, praised Sankey as the 11th Lions player to receive the honour, saying, "From Day 1, 'Sank' has set the standard for what we have wanted to build on defence."
Following the announcement, Sankey told teammates, "Man, I can't even, I'm like, shaking," and shared, "It's been a pleasure just to be in this building with you all; it's really something special."
The B.C. Lions visit the Edmonton Elks in the West Division final this Saturday, with the winner advancing to the Grey Cup on November 15 in Calgary.
