Elks’ Justin Rankin looks to solve B.C. Lions’ run defence in western final
Justin Rankin has 1,170 rushing yards this season, and Edmonton says better blocking can open lanes after B.C. limited him in two meetings.
On Saturday, the Edmonton Elks host the Lions at Commonwealth Stadium in the CFL Western Final. The Elks earned home-field advantage after finishing the regular season 13-5.
The Lions remain the only team to effectively stifle star running back Justin Rankin. During a July 4 matchup, they held him to 19 yards on seven carries.
Despite rushing for 1,170 yards at 5.7 yards per carry over 17 games, Rankin averaged only 2.7 and 1.3 yards per carry in previous meetings with the Lions.
Elks offensive-line coach Stephen Sorrells said Tuesday the team is confident they can counter the Lions' defence. "We feel like we have answers this week," Sorrells said.
Rankin emphasized that his focus remains on the final score rather than individual statistics. "The biggest thing is that we're winning games regardless of whether the run game is hitting," he said.
