Iraq has transferred over 3,000 Islamic State detainees from Syria since late January to prevent escapes and prosecute under Iraqi law, officials said.
- Fuad Hussein told Reuters at the Munich Security Conference on Feb 13, "I think around 3,000 have already been transferred into Iraqi prisons. So the process started and we are continuing that process."
- Following Syrian government gains in zones formerly held by Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, the U.S. military began transferring around 7,000 suspects last month, Saad Maan said.
- Amid the transfers, Iraqi officials have opened discussions with other countries and warned of a recent uptick in IS activity near the border, Hussein said.
- Iraqi prisons already house many IS suspects and courts have issued hundreds of death sentences and life terms, and Iraq's judiciary confirmed earlier this month it launched investigations into transferred individuals.
- The repatriation and legal hurdles for foreign fighters position Iraq to seek international support, as European countries remain hesitant due to early-release risks and Islamic State remnants persist in Syria.
