Iranian hackers responsible for Los Angeles transit system breach, Israeli researchers say
Israeli researchers say the hack stole 700 gigabytes of data and disrupted some transit displays without stopping trains or buses.
- Iranian hackers orchestrated a cyberattack against the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority in March, stealing 700 gigabytes of sensitive data including emails and backups, according to Israeli cybersecurity firm Gambit Security.
- The attack has been attributed to Ababil of Minab, a pro-Iran group whose name references a bombing in the Iranian city of Minab that killed more than 175 children and teachers, with researchers alleging it functions as a cut-out for Iranian spies.
- Gambit Security's report published on Tuesday linked the stolen data server to a previously known operation attributed to Tehran through digital forensics, with director Eyal Sela stating the evidence now supports what "has been a working assumption" about Ababil's Iranian state connection.
- Although trains and buses continued operating, the breach disabled arrival screens and prevented customers from loading transit cards, triggering an FBI investigation coordinating with partners in response alongside local cyber specialists.
- Ababil has claimed responsibility for attacks on South Florida's Tri-Rail, vehicle tracking company Vyncs, and Saudi infrastructure firm Unimac, while Iranian hackers are suspected of remotely tampering with fuel gauges at gas stations, reflecting escalating cyber threats since the U.S. and Israel declared war in late February.
