More than one million Afghans, some of whom had been born in Iran or had been living there for decades, were forcibly returned to Afghanistan in 2025 as part of an illegal expulsion campaign carried out by the Iranian authorities, and these mass expulsions intensified with the rise of hostilities between Israel and Iran, with more than half a million Afghans being expelled since 1 June 2025, including several thousand unaccompanied minors.
