Iran-backed Houthi rebels warn against joining Saudi Arabia in Yemen's growing civil war
Mohamed al-Bukhaiti said the rebels can fight on multiple fronts and will keep attacking Saudi Arabia until its blockade ends.
- On Sunday, a senior official with the Iran-backed Houthi rebels warned countries against joining Saudi Arabia in the revived civil war, assuring the Trump administration that his group will not attack United States vessels in the Red Sea.
- The escalation ended a 2022 ceasefire that largely halted Yemen's civil war, which has killed at least 150,000 people; with Houthis now controlling the western coast, Al-Bukhaiti said "the balance of power has shifted in favor of the Sanaa government."
- On Saturday, Houthi forces targeted Riyadh with missile and drone strikes, while the rebels also declared a blockade on Saudi shipping in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, attacking oil facilities inside the kingdom.
- Al-Bukhaiti warned that the rebels have the capacity to fight on multiple fronts "should any nation become implicated in the aggression against Yemen alongside Saudi Arabia," claiming "Today, Yemen is capable of waging battle — not merely an internal conflict."
- The United States, having bombed the Houthis under both the Biden and Trump administrations, has shown no interest in military involvement, while diplomatic negotiations with Iran fell apart weeks ago, leaving Saudi Arabia struggling to contain rebel attacks.
