Iran announces closure of Strait of Hormuz after US attacks
Iran said any vessel entering the waterway will be targeted after U.S. strikes, and oil prices climbed about 2% as the conflict widened.
- On Thursday, Iran’s military command declared the Strait of Hormuz closed to all vessels, including oil tankers. The Khatam al-Anbiya command warned that any vessel attempting to pass through the strategic waterway will be targeted.
- At President Donald Trump’s direction, the U.S. launched renewed strikes against multiple targets in Iran late Wednesday. Central Command officials stated the military action was in response to Iran’s "unwarranted and continued aggression."
- Citing "repeated violations" of an April ceasefire, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it struck two oil tankers attempting to illegally pass through the strait. However, the U.S. military denied the waterway had been fully closed.
- President Trump warned that Tehran would "pay the price" for stalled negotiations, while President Masoud Pezeshkian slammed the threat as a "sign of desperation." Separately, 22 nations issued a joint statement demanding Iran stop attacking individuals on foreign soil.
- Global energy markets face uncertainty as the conflict threatens access to roughly a fifth of the world's oil supply. Trump claimed the U.S. has been removing millions of barrels daily, keeping prices at $85-$90 a barrel.
