Some Iowa Teens Could Receive $100 in Restitution From Meta Lawsuit
Iowa will use the fund to pay restitution and strengthen safety measures for children after joining a settlement that includes 25 states and $1 billion from Meta.
- On Monday, Sept. 14, 2026, Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird announced plans to distribute $126 million from a Meta settlement, with $25 million creating a first-of-its-kind restitution fund for young Iowans harmed by the company's platforms.
- Iowa joined 46 other states in suing Meta, alleging the company knowingly exposed young people to mental health hazards and intentionally designed Facebook and Instagram features to be addictive, resulting in the $1.7 billion multistate settlement.
- Bird said the $25 million restitution fund could provide about $100 to each eligible 13- to 16-year-old affected by teen Instagram accounts. Additional funds will support school resource officers and a new Special Victims Unit within the Iowa Attorney General's office.
- Meta must implement stronger parental controls and daily time limits for teenagers under the settlement. Iowa could receive more than the guaranteed $126.5 million if social media rivals YouTube and TikTok adopt similar reforms, Bird noted.
- Harlan Schools Assistant Principal Anthony Donahoo said schools now handle online bullying and deepfake threats that did not exist 15 years ago. Settlement funding aims to bolster school resource officers as a primary defense against these emerging digital harms.
