Silent Invasion: Non-Native Trees Gradually Squeezing Out Native Species In US Forests, UF Study Reveals
A comprehensive new study from the University of Florida paints a concerning picture for the future of American forests. Tracking over five million trees across nearly three decades, researchers have uncovered a troubling trend: the steady decline of native tree species as non-native counterparts gain ground. The findings, published this week in the prestigious journal […] Silent Invasion: Non-Native Trees Gradually Squeezing Out Native Species …
Introduced trees are becoming more common in the eastern United States, while native diversity declines
In a new study, researchers used more than 5 million measurements from individual trees across much of eastern North America and showed the rate at which introduced species are spreading has increased over the last two decades. Additionally, native tree diversity is on the decline in areas where exotic species originally introduced by humans have encroached.
Environmental News Network - Introduced Trees Are Becoming More Common in the Eastern United States, While Native Diversity Declines
In the largest study of its kind, researchers at the Florida Museum of Natural History have used data from a 120-year-old program managed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to quantify the effects of introduced species.
How Is Human Mismanagement Reshaping the Biodiversity of American Forests?
A study by Liu and colleagues published in PNAS has found that where human-introduced non-native tree species establish and spread in eastern US forests, native tree diversity decreases, altering forest community composition and biodiversity patterns. The study may help identify ecosystems at risk. The study is the result of over 5 million tree measurements across eastern US forests, over almost 30 years. The results revealed a consistent patter…
