Interim Universities of Wisconsin Leader Named as Search for Next President Begins
Wachter will lead the 13-campus system while a 25-member search committee looks for a permanent president later this year, regents said.
On Friday, the Universities of Wisconsin Board of Regents appointed UW-Superior Chancellor Renée Wachter as interim president, effective May 18, succeeding Jay Rothman following his firing last month.
The board unanimously fired Rothman in April, citing a loss of confidence in his leadership; Rothman later claimed he was "blindsided" by the decision, saying he was never given a reason.
Leading UW-Superior since 2011, Wachter is the system's longest-tenured chancellor among 13 universities. Regents President Amy Bogost stated, "Renée brings the experience, judgment and institutional understanding this moment requires."
Bogost named a 25-member Presidential Search Committee led by Regent Ashok Rai, which will work with executive search firm AGB Search to identify a permanent successor for the system.
The Presidential Search Committee will convene in the coming weeks to establish search procedures, with officials anticipating the board will select a full-time system president later this year.
