Intel CTO and AI Boss Quits to Join OpenAI
Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan assumes leadership of AI efforts after CTO Sachin Katti departs for OpenAI, which plans major investments in artificial general intelligence, sources say.
- Intel announced on Monday that CEO Lip-Bu Tan will oversee AI efforts after chief technology and AI officer Sachin Katti left to join OpenAI after six months.
- Katti had led Intel's AI efforts since January, and he praised working with Lip-Bu Tan, Pat Gelsinger, and Nick McKeown after four years leading networking, edge computing, and AI.
- OpenAI president Greg Brockman posted on X that Katti will design and build compute infrastructure to power AGI research, and Katti wrote he was `Excited for the opportunity to work with` Brockman and Sam Altman.
- Intel thanked Sachin Katti for his contributions and wished him well, and said AI remains one of its highest strategic priorities with a focus on executing its AI technology and product roadmap.
- The broader context is that OpenAI loses billions each quarter while investing tens of billions in datacenters and AGI, as Intel arguably trails hyperscalers like Google and AWS and Broadcom in AI silicon design.
