Instagram’s New Instants App Is Basically Snapchat All over Again
The app lets users send photos that disappear after one view and last 24 hours as Meta tests multiple versions.
- On Thursday, Meta launched Instants, a standalone app for disappearing photos, in Italy and Spain. The company confirmed the new image-sharing service is currently testing how users respond to this dedicated ephemeral experience.
- Instants functions as a rebranded version of the Shots feature previously embedded within Instagram messages. The app mimics core Snapchat elements, focusing on ephemeral content to encourage authentic, low-pressure interactions between friends.
- Users capture photos through the in-app camera, remaining available for 24 hours and viewable only once. While text can be added, Instants prohibits further modifications, stripping the process down to "real life, real quick."
- Meta intends to "give people low-pressure ways to connect with friends," a spokesperson confirmed. The company is exploring multiple versions to determine feature popularity while shifting focus toward private, casual sharing.
- The company has not announced whether Instants will launch in the United States. Currently serving as an experiment, users in test regions can choose between the standalone app or viewing content via Instagram.
