Murrell used fake invoices to cover up £400,000 spending spree
Prosecutors said Murrell used fake invoices and party charge cards to conceal spending on cars, watches and a motorhome over 12 years.
On Tuesday, the High Court in Edinburgh heard prosecutors outline their case against former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell, who admitted embezzling more than £400,000 from the party between 2010 and 2022.
Murrell falsified accounting records and created fake invoices to disguise personal purchases as legitimate party expenses, including a £124,550 motorhome and robotic lawnmower described as "stage payment."
The hearing revealed 383 Amazon purchases totaling £42,660.74, alongside doctored invoices for "Apple processor" and "studio light fittings" valued at more than £14,000 that covered personal goods.
Former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, Murrell's estranged wife, denied knowing of the crimes, stating she was "deceived, misled and betrayed" after a two-year police investigation cleared her.
First Minister John Swinney condemned the embezzlement as an "overwhelming betrayal," while Murrell remains on remand at HMP Edinburgh awaiting sentencing scheduled for June 23.
Caravan, Dyson dryer, toilet paper supply: The SNP scandal around Peter Murrell is becoming more and more absurd – and Nicola Sturgeon has seen nothing again.
