Mississauga man convicted in U.S. attack plot pleads guilty to stabbing prison officers

Abdulrahman El Bahnasawy admitted to stabbing two prison officers with a makeshift weapon in 2020 as a terrorist act supporting ISIS, officials said.

  • On Nov. 5, 2025, Abdulrahman El Bahnasawy pleaded guilty this week to stabbing two correctional officers at United States Penitentiary Allenwood in Pennsylvania while serving a sentence for plotting a terrorist attack in support of the so-called Islamic State in 2020.
  • Federal records show Abdulrahman El Bahnasawy plotted bombings and shootings in New York City in summer 2016 with two co-conspirators and pleaded guilty Oct. 13, 2016, sentenced Dec. 19, 2018.
  • Using an improvised weapon from part of a steel desk, Bahnasawy stabbed one officer in the head and face and another in the hand, officials said.
  • One officer suffered catastrophic injury, losing his right eye, and the U.S. Department of Justice says Bahnasawy pleaded guilty to assault with intent to commit murder and providing material support to the so-called Islamic State, facing a maximum sentence of 130 years under U.S. federal law.
  • Federal records identify Abdulrahman El Bahnasawy as a 27-year-old Kuwait-born Canadian from Ontario linked to the 2020 prison attack, with law enforcement noting long-term federal involvement.
