I can smell it immediately when I step out of the Lafayette Avenue subway station in Brooklyn – the one that has become the smell of the American metropolis for me. It is the smell of marijuana. Today, it is more present in the metropolis than the old New York smells, like roasted nuts, pretzels – or, for that matter, the subway's slightly nauseating mixture of humidity and rat poison.
