Two Cases of Infant Botulism Now Confirmed in Oregon Following ByHeart Recall

The recall covers all ByHeart powdered infant formula nationwide after 23 hospitalizations due to suspected botulism, with cases confirmed across 13 states, CDC says.

  • On Nov. 14, federal health agencies reported 23 infants with suspected or confirmed infant botulism linked to ByHeart Whole Nutrition infant formula from 13 states, and all were hospitalized.
  • ByHeart Inc., formula maker, first recalled two batches on Nov. 8 and expanded its voluntary recall nationwide on Nov. 11 after the FDA requested the expansion following more infant illnesses.
  • Preliminary California Department of Public Health testing found C. botulinum spores in an opened ByHeart can, and laboratory confirmation is ongoing; 22 infants with available age/sex data ranged from 16 to 200 days, 10 female.
  • ByHeart urged families to stop using recalled cans, seek emergent care, and contact hello@byheart.com or 429-4327, while two families filed lawsuits and the company offered refunds for cans bought after October 1, 2025.
  • ByHeart's Open Hearted Initiative has supplied nearly 24,000 cans and PDX Diaper Bank received 400, distributed 312, and disposed of 88, while outreach to families remains unclear.
