Why Is Caitlin Clark at Indy 500? Explaining WNBA Star's Grand Marshal Role at Racing Event
The Indiana Fever guard will command drivers to their cars and join pre-race festivities after a six-day schedule break made her appearance possible.
On Sunday, Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark served as grand marshal for the 2026 Indy 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, commanding drivers to their cars before the race.
A six-day schedule break between Fever games against the Golden State Valkyries allowed Clark to participate for the first time; previous years' game conflicts prevented her attendance.
Clark told fans, "I'm here at the Indy 500 with all my friends," after walking the red carpet. Fever coach Stephanie White called the role "one of the highest honors" in Indiana.
Joining a prestigious list of Indiana sports legends, Clark now stands alongside Peyton Manning, Larry Bird, Reggie Miller, and Tamika Catchings as past grand marshals.
INDYCAR and IMS President J. Douglas Boles said the Gainbridge partnership brings unique energy to "The Greatest Spectacle," fulfilling fans' long desire to share the event with Clark.
