Lincolnshire care firms say they face struggle to hire locally
- Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced plans on Monday to ban overseas recruitment of care workers and tighten skilled worker visa access in the UK.
- The government aims to reduce net migration, which reached 906,000 in 2023 and fell to 728,000 in 2024, by ending a visa scheme allowing overseas health and social care hiring.
- Care providers report about 131,000 social care vacancies nationally and say restricting overseas workers could worsen already lengthy care waiting lists and workforce shortages.
- Figures show care visa applications dropped from 299,800 in 2023 to 63,800 in April–December 2024, while Unison and Care England warn the sector risks collapse without foreign staff.
- The plans prompt concerns among care firms and unions, who call for reassurances for current overseas workers and urge the government to focus on fair pay and domestic training.
