Indonesia orangutan forest cleared for 'carbon-neutral' packaging firm
The investigation traced wood from cleared rainforest to Asia Symbol’s supply chain, and Haleon ended purchases after finding 30,000 hectares were lost.
- British pharmaceutical giant Haleon cut ties with Asia Symbol after an investigation linked the supplier to Borneo deforestation. Haleon previously used Asia Symbol's "carbon-neutral" packaging for Panadol and Sensodyne products.
- Asia Symbol's parent company, Royal Golden Eagle , secured a $1 billion "sustainability-linked loan" in 2024 despite committing to a deforestation-free supply chain in 2015. Investigations suggest the Singapore-headquartered conglomerate remains active in forest clearing.
- The Phoenix Resources International mill supplied pulp to Asia Symbol, with plantations feeding the mill clearing nearly 30,000 hectares of forest between 2016 and 2024. Government audit reports confirmed the mill received timber from 12 concessions.
- "My eyes well up remembering how it was," said Agau, a village secretary in Central Kalimantan, describing the devastation. Communities lose livelihoods and face increased flooding as forest cover disappears.
- Asia Symbol has "commenced a focused review of PRI-related sourcing" while seeking to regain Forest Stewardship Council certification. Previous certification attempts stalled over allegations that staff from an affiliate attacked an Indigenous community.
