Indonesian forest loss surges by 66% in 2025, driven by Prabowo's self-sufficiency drive, report shows

Forest clearing for food self-sufficiency, bioenergy, palm oil, and mining caused Indonesia's 433,751-hectare loss, highest since 2016, environmental think tank Auriga Nusantara said.

  • On Tuesday, environmental think tank Auriga Nusantara reported that Indonesia's forest loss surged 66% in 2025, clearing 433,751 hectares and reaching the highest rate in eight years.
  • Chairman Timer Manurung of Auriga attributed the surge to President Prabowo Subianto's food security and energy programs, which allocated 20.6 million hectares of forest areas, 43% natural forest.
  • Borneo experienced the fastest forest shrinkage, while more than 78,000 hectares of "food reserve forest" were cleared and 41,162 hectares converted to mining concessions.
  • Manurung warned that clearing of peatlands is "not suitable for rice" and increases fire risk during the upcoming El Nino-driven dry season.
  • Indonesia's Forestry Ministry stated it will strengthen measures to control deforestation, while experts urge expanding conservation areas outside forest estates to better protect natural forests.
