Indonesia eyes US tariff deal signing in January, says all issues settled

The deal includes US tariff cuts to 19%, exemptions on palm oil and coffee, and Indonesia's commitment to purchase $15–19 billion in US goods, including Boeing jets.

  • On Dec 23, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said Indonesia resolved all substantive issues and expects President Prabowo Subianto and President Donald Trump to sign the trade deal in late January with Prabowo traveling to the US.
  • Under a July framework, Indonesia agreed to eliminate tariffs on over 99% of US goods while the United States cut tariffs on Indonesian products to 19%, despite earlier this month tensions over alleged backtracking.
  • Among specific concessions, the US agreed to exempt tariffs on palm oil, coffee and tea, while Indonesia pledged roughly $19 billion in US purchases including 50 Boeing Co. jets.
  • The deal reduces uncertainty for Indonesia's economy and secures balanced market access amid two-way trade valued at $36.2 billion with Indonesia's $14.9 billion surplus.
  • Technical teams will meet for a `legal scrubbing` between Jan 12 and 19, 2026, and Airlangga said there is no risk of the US restoring the 32% tariff if signing delays occur.
