Okanagan Indian Band Provides Additional Name for New Active Living Centre
The new name reflects syilx language and culture as the city’s largest recreation project nears completion, officials said.
On Wednesday, Oct. 7, the City of Vernon and the Okanagan Indian Band unveiled the nsyilxcYn name for the Vernon Active Living Centre, which will also be known as snyatun, meaning "where they gather and play."
OKIB Elders Pauline Archachan, Herbert Bonneau, Virginia Gregoire, and Doreene Kaye suggested the name after learning about the facility, as incorporating syilx culture was a key objective for Vernon Council during design.
Physical design elements mirror the Okanagan hills while educational signage and a salmon display in the lobby showcase syilx culture; the recreation hub features 50-metre and 25-metre pools, a double gymnasium, and wellness spaces.
Vernon Mayor Victor Cumming praised the collaboration with OKIB, stating the ALC creates a welcoming space, while OKIB Chief Dan Wilson noted the project recognizes their people's history and continued presence.
Construction concludes Oct. 30, followed by a six-week period for staff training and testing; membership pre-sales begin Nov. 1, ahead of the scheduled public opening in December 2026.
