India's largest conglomerate stops Russian oil imports amid global pressure

Reliance will process Russian oil only for domestic use and export exclusively non-Russian crude from Dec. 1 to comply with EU restrictions and avoid US sanctions, handling about 50% of India's Russian imports.

  • At Jamnagar, the company stopped importing Russian crude effective November 20 and will ship non-Russian products from December 1, completing the transition ahead of schedule.
  • To preserve banking and export access, Reliance Industries moved to halt Russian crude imports after U.S. and EU sanctions targeted Rosneft and Lukoil, noting Europe takes 28% of its exports.
  • The last Russian cargo was loaded November 12, and post-November 20 arrivals are diverted to the Domestic Tariff Area while Jamnagar refining complex buys 1 million barrels from Kuwait Petroleum and Middle Eastern crude grades.
  • As a result, the long-term Rosneft tie supplying nearly 500,000 bpd to Jamnagar is effectively mothballed, shielding Reliance Industries from legal risks while redirecting Russian crude barrels away from its export routes.
  • With enforcement deadlines looming, the early transition reflects the U.S. wind-down window ending November 21, while tightening product-import restrictions on January 21 will reshape global crude flows.
