- On Sunday, BJP MP Raghav Chadha addressed the 12th IPU Global Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, showcasing India's digital transformation and highlighting the agreement to link India's UPI with Uzbekistan's UZQR system for cross-border payments.
- India's Digital India initiative, launched in 2015, expanded internet subscribers from 250 million to more than one billion, while data costs fell 97 per cent, fostering unprecedented financial inclusion across the country.
- Chadha noted UPI transactions grew to more than 240 billion, worth Rs 314 trillion in FY 2025-26, stating, "The numbers are not the achievement. The achievement is that a street vendor receives Rs 5 or less using this technology."
- Emphasizing responsible innovation, Chadha highlighted the Digital Personal Data Protection Act and stated regulation must be "lawful, proportionate, and transparent," rejecting the false choice between freedom and safety.
- The UPI-UZQR link follows the recent elevation of India-Uzbekistan relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, positioning the nations as leaders in digital access and setting a global benchmark for cross-border financial inclusion.
