Indiana Assessing Storm Damage: Why Officials Say Don’t Apply for FEMA Help Yet
Federal aid is already flowing after storms caused tens of millions of dollars in damage and at least seven deaths, officials said.
Gov. Mike Braun is working with President Donald Trump to secure a major disaster declaration for Indiana following historic flooding that has damaged roads, homes, and businesses across the state.
Historic flooding displaced "well over 1,000" residents as flood waters travel south to Morgan, Johnson, and Marion counties, destroying critical infrastructure and prompting the state's emergency response.
Braun activated a State Disaster Relief Fund providing $5,000 grants to displaced individuals for clothing and food, alongside temporary housing vouchers while awaiting federal approval.
Homeland Security Executive Director Jonathan Whitham described the declaration process as "lengthy," with FEMA teams assessing damages this week and state officials expecting clarity within seven to 10 days.
Should the federal government deny the request, the state will utilize its $4 billion reserve fund to support recovery, ensuring resources remain available for impacted Hoosiers.
