Indiana AG Sues Roblox, Discord over Child Safety
The suit says predators used the platforms to target children and seeks penalties of up to $5,000 per knowing violation.
- On Thursday, Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita announced a lawsuit against Roblox Corp. and Discord Inc., alleging the platforms failed to employ sufficient protections against online predators and violated the Deceptive Consumer Sales Act.
- The filing cites 17-year-old Hailey Buzbee of Fishers, who was lured from her home by a predator met on the platforms—one of at least three Indiana girls groomed while using Roblox.
- Rokita argues these companies "know full well" that predatory criminals target children on their services, while Roblox and Discord maintain they have implemented multilayered safety systems with advanced AI-powered detection.
- The lawsuit seeks injunctive and declaratory relief to prevent further harm, disgorgement of profits, and civil penalties of up to $5,000 per knowing violation, plus reimbursement of investigative costs.
- Although both companies claim they are constantly enhancing safeguards, the Attorney General's office stated the effectiveness of newly implemented safety features "remains to be seen.
