'People Will Celebrate': Piyush Goyal Says India to Have Comparative Edge in US Trade Deal
Goyal said the pact would protect sensitive sectors and farmers as India and the United States wrap up a deal that officials say is 99% done.
On Thursday, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said India will gain a "strong comparative advantage" after finalizing the trade agreement with the United States, speaking at the 4th ISID-IDRA National Conference in Delhi.
India withdrew from the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership in 2019 to prevent becoming a "nation of salesmen" marketing Chinese goods, a decision Goyal said protected domestic manufacturing from an imbalanced agreement.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said last week that India and the United States are "weeks away" from signing, with 99% of work completed. Officials report convergence on most issues, including previously contentious oil tariffs.
Goyal assured that "the people of India will celebrate" once details emerge, confirming no sensitive farmer interests were compromised. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman previously noted talks had "plateaued," though recent progress improved deal prospects.
The United States recently paused the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, easing pressure on Indian oil imports. This pact aims to create complementary opportunities with 38 prosperous countries, bolstering India's industrial competitiveness.
